Primary Summary:

The YMCA focus is to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, and in accordance with the established policies of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham, the Aquatic Coordinator will be directly responsible for the sound operation of aquatics schedules and other aquatic safety based programs. The Aquatic Coordinator will assist in the recruiting, training, and evaluation of aquatic staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in recruitment, training, development, and evaluation of aquatic staff.
  • Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Personally provide a minimum of 15-20 hours per week of direct service as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor.
  • Be accountable for coverage of all assigned lifeguard and swim instructor shifts.
  • Teach and/or guard in the absence of a scheduled lifeguard or swim instructor as necessary.
  • Coordinate substitute procedures for staff; record all changes and maintain up-to-date staff schedule.
  • Assist with leadership at all lifeguard/swim instructor in-service trainings and meetings including evaluations of swim instructors.
  • Supervise aquatic staff in the absence of the Aquatic Director.
  • Inspect and ensure high standards of maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of aquatic equipment and supplies, including first aid supplies.
  • Evening and weekend hours required; coordinate schedule with Aquatic Director.
  • Assist Aquatic Director with special events.
  • Coordinate and schedule swim lessons including group and private lessons.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Aquatic Director.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Two years aquatic experience; for example, lifeguard or swim instructor.
  • Must demonstrate positive leadership skills as role models for other staff.
  • Demonstrates dependability, strong communication skills with staff and patrons, and the ability to present a mature and personable image.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Exhibits the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of work with the YMCA.
  • Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Successful completion of background screening.
  • Acquire and maintain the following certifications via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):
    • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)
  • Requisite Redwoods Online Training Modules (completed annually).

Physical Demands:

  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
