Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Plant Controller for our new Lumber Mill located in Talladega, AL. As the Plant Controller, you will be the key financial leader at the facility, with an opportunity to gain a valuable understanding of the various elements of the manufacturing process. While in this position you will obtain excellent knowledge of the key drivers of success in our business and will be provided the opportunity to learn from all levels of management in one of the largest private companies in North America. This location will receive about 150 log trucks a day and produce approximately 230 million board-feet of lumber a year with plans to expand beyond that in the future! This is an exciting opportunity to work in a brand new and technologically advanced plant.
Georgia-Pacific’s building products business is North America's No. 1 producer of wood panels – namely plywood and oriented strand board – and is a leading producer of gypsum products and lumber. Georgia-Pacific is also a major supplier to large do-it-yourself warehouse retailers. This role is a key business support function for a facility.
The Plant Controller creates value for the company by 1) partnering with operations leadership to improve the effectiveness of our operations and 2) insuring the protection of the company’s assets through strong and cost effective internal controls.
These objectives are accomplished by:
  • Providing financial and economic decision-making support through operational gap analysis, capital planning support, and other ad-hoc analysis.
  • Developing accounting & finance process improvement initiatives by creating & sharing best practices and promoting innovation.
  • Facilitating collaboration & knowledge sharing, utilizing the challenge process, to seek the best knowledge available, to positively impact both the operational and the finance capabilities.
  • Internal financial control responsibility
  • Balance sheet and income statement review and ownership
  • Oversight of month-end close process
  • Maintaining plant transactional systems
Business Analysis
  • Manufacturing and business decision analysis
  • Economic decision-making
  • Forecasting
  • Variance analysis
  • Create value through process improvements and analysis on new business, new equipment, and cost reduction initiatives
What You Will Need:

Education Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance or Business
Basic Qualifications:
  • At least FIVE years of experience in a similar Accounting or Finance role
  • Basic understanding of a General Ledger and Cost Accounting principles
  • Conceptual understanding of the design and purpose of internal controls
  • Aptitude and desire for learning new systems and improving processes through automation
  • Ability to mine and convert data into meaningful information through leveraging software and other state of the art tools
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel (i.e. - spreadsheet creation/editing, pivot tables, data manipulation/analysis and formulas creation etc.) PowerPoint (presentation creation and editing) and MS Word (document creation, formatting and editing etc.)

What Will Put You Ahead:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong foundational knowledge of US GAAP and inventory accounting
  • Accounting Coursework that includes Intermediate Accounting and Cost Accounting
  • SAP, Infinium, Infor or large ERP experience preferred
  • Inventory and Cost Accounting experience for multiple products is preferred
  • Experience as an Accountant or Analyst in a manufacturing environment
  • Leadership or previous Supervisory experience
