Job Summary: Performs a broad scope of professional accounting activities requiring experienced, professional knowledge and application of accounting principles and practices.

Additional Department Summary: The Accountant oversees all aspects of accounting, budgeting, cost accounting, and other fiscal functions for The University of Alabama Ferguson Student Center. As the “community center” for The University of Alabama, the Ferguson Student Center provides services and maintains facilities to enhance the campus life experience for students and others in the University community. The Ferguson Student Center is a 300,000+ sq. ft., multi-purpose facility including a 1,000+ seat capacity ballroom, a 400+ seat theater, 21 meeting rooms, a food court, Crimson Catering (University catering department), three computer labs, numerous office spaces, SUPestore (University bookstore), Mail Center, full-service bank, copy and print center, and multiple lounge spaces. The purpose of this position is to provide general accounting and administration support to the FSC staff. The position will provide accurate, timely, processing and analysis of journal entries and reports; record keeping and maintenance of ledgers; review and reconcile accounts; collect, compile, enter, and verify accuracy of data and transactions. The Accountant will provide leadership in directing and coordinating the preparation of FSC operational budgets to include the analysis of institutional expenses, the development of budget forecasts, and the auditing of budget expenditures and variances for all areas within FSC. Propose resource allocation and participate in the long term financial planning for the department in coordination with the Ferguson Student Center Director. The Accountant supervises, hires, develops, schedules, trains, and evaluates student employees within the FSC fiscal office and assists other staff to develop student staff training and monthly student development opportunities. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree or higher in Accounting or Finance and one (1) year of accounting experience; OR a CPA and some accounting experience.

Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP. Knowledge of finance and accounting principles. Knowledge of and ability to use financial and accounting applications specific to the University of Alabama. Knowledge of data mining and analysis tools, techniques and processes. Ability to prepare financial statements and reports. Ability to perform financial analysis and prepare a report documenting the analysis. Ability to process information with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to use basic office tools such as, Word, e-mail, PowerPoint and Excel. Ability to communicate effectively with clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, and other written materials. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing excellent service to customers in a student union or conference center setting. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal including a customer service orientation and ability to collaborate and develop partnerships with various University departments, faculty, staff and student organizations. Demonstrated knowledge and ability in inventory management. Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems effectively and independently. Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, evaluate, supervise, train, and schedule student staff. Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge and experience with event scheduling software such as EMS and university systems such as Banner and Concur. Demonstrated experience working within a higher education (university or college) environment. Management and supervisory experience along with excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills. Extensive experience developing trend analysis, forecasting and planning; experience working with on-line financial accounting management systems and human resource Information systems. In-depth understanding of accounting procedures specific to not-for-profit agencies or higher education institutions. Advanced degree and CPA(Certified Public Accountant) preferred.
